Course description

Being able to identify the signs and symptoms of someone suffering from suicidal thoughts is crucial for anyone who works with children, young people or vulnerable adults

Lack of mental wellbeing in children, young people and vulnerable adults can lead to suicidal thoughts suicidal ideation.

This course goes into the reasons for such thoughts, explains why some people are vulnerable, and gives guidance on how to support people in this situation.

Understanding the Impacts of Suicidal Thoughts: IntroductionThis introduction will give you the overall learning outcomes of the course such as explaining what is meant by suicidal thoughts and outline why people can experience them, describing how prevalent suicide is, identifying and explaining risk factors for suicidal thoughts and outlining why adolescents are at an increased risk.
Understanding, Identifying and Reducing the Risk of SuicideThis section will enable you to understand suicide and suicidal thoughts, so that you can react appropriately to relevant situations and raise awareness of these issues. After completing this module, you will be able to explain what is meant by suicidal thoughts and outline why people can experience them, outline how prevalent suicide is, identify and explain risk factors for suicidal thoughts and outline why adolescents are at an increased risk. You will look at some statistics surrounding suicide, the personality traits that are at risk and how you can help.
Crisis and Support OrganisationsIn this section, you will look at the definition of crisis and show ways in which how you can help, such as contacting A&E or the Samaritans.  We also outline the wide range of organisations that people who experience suicidal thoughts can contact and get support from. This section contains a downloadable resource that you can keep for your records or future use.
ChallengesThis section of the training gives you a series of challenges that have been designed to help you check your knowledge on what suicidal thoughts are and what triggers them, what personality traits and other factors that might present a higher risk of suicidal thoughts and suicide, how to identify these traits and factors and how to help people with suicidal thoughts. 

The course includes a range of scenarios to enable to learner to reflect on own practice and engage in their learning; it also includes knowledge check challenges throughout.

This course is suitable for teachers, teaching assistants, social workers, police, volunteers, care workers and school support staff. It is also suitable for all employees (in any work environment) who would benefit from understanding more about mental health and how to support themselves.

Accreditation

The content of this online Suicidal Thoughts training course has been independently certified as conforming to universally accepted Continuous Professional Development (CPD) guidelines.

Duration

This online Suicidal Thoughts training course will take approximately one to two hours to complete, depending on how quickly learners can study and absorb the material. Learners do not have to complete all the training in one session as progress is recorded throughout.

Entry requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

Assessment and Certificate

After completing all of the training material you will be able to take the online assessment which consists of 10 questions and has a pass mark of 75%. Once you have undertaken all of the activities, passed the online assessment and completed the relevant evaluation you will be able to download and print your certificate.
