The Northern Tech Awards celebrate the leading technology businesses located in the North of England and Scotland and the pioneering leaders who have developed the region’s innovative technologies.
We are delighted that Cam Glennon, a Learning Technology Consultants, won the Rising Star Award – Bronze at the Learning and Performance Institute’s Learning Awards.
Cam was recognised for his passion and willingness to think outside the box, as well as his motivation to build our reputation as a specialist L&D organisation. He achieved this by helping to build up the number of bespoke solutions contracts, as well as take a lead role in successful campaigns and events, which helped us reach new audiences and develop our stance as a thought leader in the L&D industry.
The Learning Awards celebrate success and achievements in workplace learning, and the passion and creativity that is required. It has an international reach, receiving submissions from countries worldwide, and is seen as a true global celebration of the L&D industry.
Best Use of Technology in Learning – Silver was one of two awards we won at the Training Journal Awards this year. Both of the awards recognised our innovative health and safety project which was developed with Make UK and Fujitsu.
We partnered with Make UK to create a health and safety training solution for global company Fujitsu, who aimed to develop a culture across all its offices worldwide which is intolerance of accidents, incidents and poor safety performance. This specific award honoured the innovative technology we created to help engage the learners and embed the culture. It included ten modules, a serious game, and was accessible and relevant to all its employees.
The Training Journal Awards recognise the ingenuity, creativity, passion and hard work of learning and development professionals from around the world. The awards’ categories allow a broad range of companies and individuals to participate and reflect the increasing diversity and scope in the L&D landscape.

Best Training Partnership – Bronze was the second award we won at the Training Journal Awards.
This award honoured the success of our partnership with Make UK, a leading expert in health and safety training. The partnership perfectly combined our strengths – Make UK acted as the subject matter experts, and we provided the technology and expertise to deliver the project on a global scale. Together we ensured the project met its main objective: creating a culture across Fujitsu’s global offices which is intolerant of accidents, incidents and poor safety performance.

Virtual College had another successful night at the LPI’s Learning Awards with Hayley Khan picking up an award.
Devised by the Learning & Performance Institute and recognised as the L&D sector’s premier awards ceremony, this was the 22nd annual Learning Awards and was attended by 400 industry guests and finalists while being live streamed around the world.

Devised by the Learning & Performance Institute and recognised as the L&D sector’s premier awards ceremony, this was the 22nd annual Learning Awards and was attended by 400 industry guests and finalists while being live streamed around the world.
This award recognises companies that use their technology and business model to bring about positive changes in society. Virtual College was commended for delivering mass online training programme aimed at improving outcomes in the health and social care sectors.
Alison Humphreys, the Home Office FGM Policy Lead at the time of the submission, said: “Virtual College’s passion for the project and their understanding of the sensitivity of the subject, together with their experience of developing products for our target audience, meant that the end product was innovative and tailored to the needs of the learners.” Virtual College chosen as of the 20 finalists in this category.
Virtual College was awarded gold ‘for excellence in the design of learning content in the public and non-profit sector for ‘Recognising and Preventing FGM’ a course developed in partnership with the Home Office’. The judges said ”a huge amount of thought and planning had gone into the design of this content to make it engaging and relevant for the audience and to address the topic sensitively for the audience. The engagement and reaction of learners was particularly positive and the project was well managed to involve a wide range of stakeholders.”
The judges said “They clearly do a good job and their clients like them, excellent presentation, right on brief placed them right in the frame.”
Virtual College won silver in the ‘Learning Provider of the Year’ category at the (LPI) Learning and Performance Institute’s 2017 Learning Awards, which included some of the highest achieving individuals and organisations from the world of learning and development, so we were humbled to win such a prestigious award.
Explaining why they chose Virtual College as the winners, the judging panel stated that: “For two decades, Virtual College has been developing and supplying collaborative, customer-focused e-learning technology for organisations world-wide. The dedication of the team combined with an agile way of working, has further improved the level and quality of service for customers, as well as the end results in their organisations.”
Virtual College was identified as one of London Stock Exchange’s 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain, which aimed to celebrate the best of the UK’s fastest-growing and most dynamic small and medium sized businesses.
We were honoured to win gold in this highly competitive category, with our application focusing around our work created in collaboration with our NHS partners, PACE (Parents Against Child Sexual Exploitation), and Housing Ombudsman Service. The recognition of this work, combined with our content production processes, meant that we were able to proudly take home the Gold award.
The judges commented that: "Virtual College captured our imagination from the outset. Their agile methodology has delivered significant results in customer satisfaction.”
Commenting on the success at the awards, Rod Knox said: “It is hugely rewarding to receive independent recognition of our contribution to the e-learning sector.”
Our CEO Rod Knox is a pioneer in the e-learning field. His dedication to progress has shaped the online learning landscape, and his technical understanding and innovation has opened the industry to new markets. Rod’s outstanding contribution to e-learning was noted, and he was awarded the Silver in this category.
Virtual College worked with the Home Office to develop the first e-learning course on the sensitive issue of female genital mutilation (FGM). There had previously not been a cohesive approach to identifying and preventing the practice, which affects an estimated 140 million worldwide.
Since the early days of Virtual College, we have been recognised as a best practice example of e- learning development and delivery. We have worked with thousands of organisations including the NHS, Safeguarding Children boards, Coca Cola, The Ambulance Service, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols. Our long-standing position as leaders in the industry earned us the Bronze award in this prestigious category.
