Description
This course has been updated to comply with and include changes from Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2026 and Working Together to Safeguard Children (WTSC) 2026 legislation. This legislation came into force on 1st September 2026 and was published by the Department for Education.
By the end of this course, you'll be able to assess need and risk, challenge decisions professionally, keep records that stand up to scrutiny, and work confidently with other agencies to protect children.
If you work in a school, college or education setting you can take our Safeguarding in Education course which is tailored to those in the education sector. The course covers safeguarding alongside the specific duties, reporting routes and safer working practices required in an education setting. You may want to complete this course as well to develop further knowledge in preparation for Designated Safeguarding Lead training.
If you work in healthcare and need to meet Core Skills Training Framework (CSTF) requirements, you will benefit from our Statutory & Mandatory Safeguarding Children Level 3 course instead, which is directly mapped to CSTF.
Level 3 safeguarding is for those who do more than recognise and report. It's for practitioners and leads who assess whether a child is at risk, decide what happens next, and hold responsibility when the picture isn't clear.
This course covers the frameworks that underpin safeguarding practice, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and traces how well-known child protection cases have shaped UK legislation. It covers the categories of abuse and their indicators in depth, alongside the impact of abuse and the trauma responses practitioners need to recognise.
A substantial part of the course is given to professional curiosity: what disguised compliance looks like, what gets in the way of staying curious, and how to remain culturally competent while doing it. It covers responding to disclosures, questioning techniques, confidentiality and consent, the seven golden rules of information sharing, and how to make a referral and challenge a decision you disagree with.
The course also covers assessment and risk in practice, using the Assessment Framework and detailed case studies, alongside Family Help and Early Help, record keeping, and the lead practitioner role in coordinating multi-agency support, including the new Multi-Agency Child Protection Teams (MACPT). It closes with practical models for direct work with families, including Signs of Safety, solution-focused brief therapy, and how to write worry statements and goals.
We also offer Safeguarding Children Training at Level 2.
